About Us
The Alvarez Family Tradition
Alvarez Organic Farms has been in the agriculture business for well over 30 years. In those same years much of the small, environmentally friendly family farms have morphed into large-scale agribusinesses, without regard on the adverse environmental effects. Being certified organic for over 20 years, sustainable agriculture is one thing that the Alvarez Family has embedded into their farming tradition. Biodiversity is something common in organic agriculture, but at Alvarez Organic Farms we heavily promote it, by specializing in over 200 varieties of peppers and 300 different varieties of vegetables, we built our own level.

In the 1990's, after watching a news broadcast about the health hazards linked to genetically modified foods, a disappointed Hilario Alvarez knew he wanted better for his family, employees and customers. So in 1992, Alvarez Organic Farms became one of the few certified organic producers in Washington.

In those days, going organic wasn't considered the wisest move, many consumers where not well informed or still very skeptical about organics. After certification came slight increase in prices, soon Hilario's customers began disappearing.

In an effort to find a market for his under-appreciated produce, he began traveling to the Seattle area to participate in local farmers markets. Fortunately, his focus on variety made him unique and popular in the Seattle Farmers Market Scene. Our well known peppers have amounted quite a following earning us nationwide recognition.

Pride In Growing Organic
Organic Farming was just know as farming up until the late 1920's. Later, synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and large scale growing operations were introduced, ushering in a new era of chemical farming. Growing food organically means going back to the basic, old-fashioned farming techniques that support health for the environment and the people who consume it. Organic Farms put in the extra effort of regularly tending to crops, harvesting and planting mainly by hand. This usually account for the slight price difference in organics, this cost however, is upfront. Unfortunately, society bears the cost of conventionally grown foods, through food borne illnesses such as E. coli, antibiotic resistance, water pollution and a countless number of hidden cost to the environment. Many researchers are also correlating environmental chemical exposures with autism, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and many other cancers- no surprise since 55 million tons of chemical fertilizers are used every year in the U.S alone. Most of these chemicals and pesticides are retained in the soil and crops as a residue that, when eaten, can bio accumulate in your body. At Alvarez Organic Farms, our customer's health is the main reason we farm organic, but the same can't be said about the other 98% of U.S farmland. Its time to make a difference in the way we think of our fresh food, its time to buy organic!
